Since new migrant worker protection laws came into effect on 1 July 2024, authorities have been cracking down on worker exploitation across industries – including agriculture. Australian Border Force (ABF) officers have already conducted many visits to businesses, providing education and checking compliance.
For banana growers, it’s vital to not only meet your obligations as an employer but also to protect the reputation of our industry.
Exploitation can take many forms – from underpayment to using a worker’s visa status unfairly. Another issue raised by growers is competitors recruiting staff in ways that undermine legal employment arrangements, which can contribute to worker disengagement and cause further challenges for employers doing the right thing.
If you see or hear about illegal recruitment practices, migrant worker exploitation, or any activity that undermines fair employment in our industry, it’s important to report it. You can do so confidentially, and even anonymously:
Border Watch (report exploitation): Report here
Employer information on migrant worker protections: Find out more here
Check work rights: Use the Home Affairs Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) system to confirm employee work entitlements.
By reporting concerns, you are helping safeguard workers, protect your business, and uphold the integrity of the banana industry.
