Banana industry mobilises as import risk assessment continues

Australia’s banana growers are putting their money where their mouth is in 2026, signing up to make voluntary contributions to the Banana Imports Fighting Fund (BIFF) as the industry continues its biosecurity battle.

The Federal Government is currently conducting an import risk assessment following a request from the Philippines to consider alternative measures to allow banana imports into Australia.

For the nation’s banana industry – which supports thousands of regional jobs and contributes some $1.3 billion to the economy – the stakes are high. Imported fruit presents a serious biosecurity risk, with the potential to introduce exotic pests and diseases that could devastate local production.

The BIFF previously underpinned the industry’s successful campaign in the early 2000s and will once again provide a dedicated resource to mount a comprehensive, science-based response.

Funds will support the work of the Banana Imports Committee, from engaging leading scientific experts to strengthening advocacy and communications efforts.

Lakeland grower and Banana Imports Committee Chair Paul Inderbitzin said the strong early uptake of voluntary contributions showed growers were united and determined.

“There’s no second chance when it comes to biosecurity – this is our industry’s future on the line,” he said.

“We’re already meeting with key decision-makers and mobilising the expertise and resources we’ll need in the months ahead.

“If you haven’t signed up, now is the time. Every contribution strengthens our ability to protect Australian bananas.

“And to those who have already committed – thank you. We know growers are facing rising costs and ongoing challenges, but this is an investment in the long-term security of our industry.”

The Banana Imports Fighting Fund opened for contributions on 1 January 2026, with growers contributing half a cent per kilogram (7.5 cents per 15kg carton).
