Department of Primary Industries (DPI) Banana Extension Team

As temperatures increase and conditions become more favourable for yellow Sigatoka development, now is the time for growers to review their disease management strategies. Following several challenging seasons across Queensland’s wet tropics, where high rainfall and humidity have increased disease pressure, the winter-spring period provides an important opportunity to remove infected leaf material and improve canopy health before the wet season begins. To assist growers, the DPI Banana Extension Team and plant pathologist David East have developed a range of yellow Sigatoka resources outlining practical management tips and best-practice recommendations.

The yellow Sigatoka information resources have been curated as part of the previous National Banana Development and Extension Program (BA19004) which is funded by Hort Innovation, using the banana industry research and development levies and contributions from the Australian Government. Hort Innovation is the grower-owned, not-for-profit research and development corporation for Australian horticulture. The Queensland Government has also co-funded the project through the Department of Primary Industries.
