The board of the Australian Banana Growers’ Council met in Mareeba recently, discussing key issues including crop protection (access to chemistries), Panama TR4 and the threat of imports.
New faces
The meeting marked the first for the industry’s new R&D Manager, Dr Ben Callaghan, who is pictured above right with Strategy Manager Michelle McKinlay and NSW Director Stephen Spear.
Ben has brought extensive experience in horticultural R&D experience to the position, including in bananas.
Over the past four years he served as R&D Manager in the Hort Innovation Production Team, overseeing the Breeding and Biotechnology portfolio including the banana varieties project. He’s also spent time at the University of Queensland and the Queensland Department of Primary Industries.
