Meet our board director – Leon Collins

01. What is your role within the industry (e.g. grower, COO, banana category manager)?

I am a banana grower, but my family also produce sugarcane and cattle across our properties in Tully and Lakeland.

02. What is your background and how did you come to join the ABGC board?

My family operates a large banana business in Australia, with the family farming bananas since 1971. I joined the family business in 1984 and have been involved in the industry ever since.

Being part of the industry and an ABGC member has provided significant value to our business over the years. I joined the board because I wanted the opportunity to contribute back to the industry and help support the future of Australian banana growers.

03. What key priorities are you focused on as a director?

All industry priorities are important, but my current focus is on pest and disease management, particularly Panama TR4, as well as import risks and maintaining strong biosecurity protections for the industry.

04. Why should banana farmers join ABGC?

ABGC is the peak industry body representing the Australian banana industry and advocating on behalf of growers. Membership ensures growers have a strong collective voice on the key issues affecting the industry.

It is important for growers to be part of an organisation that represents their interests and works to support the long-term future of the industry. The industry also has a strong mix of younger growers coming through, while many of the more experienced growers still bring plenty of energy and passion to the sector.

05. What is a fun fact about you?

I enjoy flying the family aircraft whenever the weather is favourable and I also enjoy hunting in Africa
