Bananas are the backbone

Bananas are the backbone

The potential importation of bananas from the Philippines was discussed during recent Senate Estimates hearings, with biosecurity risks and the future of Australia’s banana industry remaining key concerns.

Questioning to Government officials were posed by Senator for Queensland Susan McDonald.

Representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) confirmed that a site visit to the Philippines had been completed and would help inform their import risk analysis. Further information about the process is expected in coming weeks.

The Senator’s questions highlighted the broader importance of Australia’s banana industry. Beyond supplying Australian consumers with fresh fruit, bananas support regional jobs, freight networks and economic activity across northern Australia.

Senator McDonald delivered a clear message: bananas are “the backbone of Australia’s food sovereignty”, reinforcing the need for a thorough, science-based process that protects Australia’s strong biosecurity status.

On top of this, she noted that growers had already told her they wouldn’t be footing the bill from any pest or disease incursions that result from a Government decision that allows imports.

As the import assessment process continues, the Banana Imports Committee and ABGC will keep advocating for our strong biosecurity standards and a transparent process that recognises the full value of Australia’s banana industry.
