For banana growers who rely on PALM workers, it’s not just frustrating, it can be costly when workers disengage or leave the scheme early. But what’s driving this behaviour, and how can growers help create better outcomes for their businesses and workers?
A team of independent researchers is tackling these questions head-on. By better understanding why some PALM workers disengage, the goal is to develop practical recommendations that could help employers improve worker satisfaction, reduce walk-offs, and boost productivity across the industry.
The information can also be used by industry to support solutions and lobby for improved government policy relating to the scheme.
Dr Kaya Barry (Griffith University), Dr Kirstie Petrou (UNSW Canberra), and Dr Matt Withers (ANU) are speaking directly with former PALM workers, growers, and local community members to get to the heart of the issue. They’ll be travelling to rural areas throughout 2025, collecting stories and experiences that will form part of a publicly available report designed to support employers.
This research is not government-led and all interviews are voluntary and anonymous.
Have you had workers leave early or go missing? Your insights could help shape a stronger, fairer PALM scheme.
