Inspiring the Next Generation of Banana Industry Talent

The Australian Banana Growers’ Council was recently invited to take part in a careers expo at Tully State High School, and it was a fantastic opportunity to put the banana industry front and centre for the next generation of Far North Queensland talent.

Member Services Manager Kathryn Dryden said, “This was a great opportunity to participate as part of our ongoing commitment to our members to promote the industry as an employer of choice and contribute to building workforce options in future.”

The event, organised by Justin Brennan, Regional University Centre Coordinator at the Vocational Partnership Group (VPG) Regional University Centres (Cassowary Coast University Centre), brought together a range of industries and study providers to help Year 11 students explore their post-graduation pathway options. Held on Monday 8 June, the expo took on a fun ‘speed dating’ format, with groups of students rotating around different stations, spending 10 minutes with each industry before moving on. With around 10 groups of students cycling through, it made for a lively and engaging morning.

ABGC was proud to represent the banana industry and speak with students about what makes it such a rewarding industry to be part of, from the job opportunities and career pathways available, to the important role the banana industry plays in communities like Tully and across Far North Queensland.

If you know someone who is interested in what a career in the banana industry could look like, share ABGC’s Career Booklet (download here) so they can explore the wide range of pathways available.
